A couple from Winston Churchill ...

You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.

I have never accepted what many people have kindly said ... namely, that I inspired the nation ... It was the nation and the race dwelling all around the globe that had the lion's heart. I had the luck to be called upon to give the roar. I also hope that I sometimes suggested to the lion the right place to use its claws. (1954)

A couple from the war years ... I love the 'fight on the beaches' quote:

We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender. (1940)

Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few. (on the Battle of Britain, 1940)

Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. (on the Battle of Egypt, 1942)

I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle wrapped up in a mystery inside an enigma. (1941)

What is our policy? ... To wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark lamentable catalogue of human crime. (1940)

What is our aim? ... Victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror; victory, however long and hard the road may be; for without victory, there is no survival. (1940)

I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. (1940)

From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic an iron curtain has descended across the Continent. (1945)

“Another fresh new year is here . . .
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!

This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest . . .
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs!”

~ William Arthur Ward

And... I remembered our chat on being optimists and pessimists the other night, which made me chuckle when I read this one...

The Song of Hiawatha is one of my favourite poems - it melts my heart. This is part of another poem called The Psalm of Life:

Let us then, be up and doing
With a heart for any fate
Still achieving, still pursuing
Learn to labour and to wait. - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

And for Carl:
Every worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. Mahatma Gandhi

That's just become my new favourite quote - it's really something.
Especially since I've just discovered I'm going to be an Aunty for the first time!! Woohoo!!!

I don't know what Aunts actually do in the grand scheme of things, except be there; but I think being a friend is a great first step; and playing their song back, if they forget the words - think I can do that...

I'm going on a spending spree for baby clothes - all neutral of course; and classical CDs - they're supposed to stimulate intelligence - and maybe some baby-calming CDs to help him/her sleep...

And then I'm just going to spoil her/him rotten and the parents can suffer the consequences!! (That's a payback, for all the times my bro. teased/ignored/humiliated me!! hehehe )

Woohoo, I'm going to be an Aunty!! I love you

Just thought- Carl's CD would be so wonderful for a baby to be hearing - smooth swing; gentle, soothing low notes; crooning trumpet; and a few wild numbers just for interest!!
Yup, definitely adding that to the list!! Very Happy

yes you will definately be a great aunty if you introduce him/her to the soft musical talent of carl riseley. i think every baby should be introduced to such a musical influence, and then we might have a wave of sensitive, caring humans in the future just like our honey man carl.

Congratulations on impeding Auntydom Sensor! But I have to ask, have the expectant couple had their scan yet?

There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared:

twins.

Josh Billings

This quote came up on my bunch-of-dates when I just discovered I was expecting twins! That was over 8 years ago now! Incidentally, our ob didn't pick up twins in the first scan. We didn't find out until 3 months preggers.

(what the ?- I was tired when I wrote the last post, I was 5 months when I got the twins news ). affraid

The Quote Thread 170715 - the ultimate payback for my big bro!!! Twins!!

Well now you've thrown me - hadn't even thought about twins!! Having enough trouble getting my head around one. hehe

I don't think they've had a scan yet - maybe a bit too early still...

I couldn't think of anything more sublime in theory, than twins; however I imagine it would be a very different reality...
Your twins must make for an exceptionally busy, exhausting, never-boring life!! I bet they're gorgeous...

Hmmm. Tiny Bubbalicious by 2???

Thanks for the wishes and love that quote!!!

Okay, here's one that I really love ... I burst out laughing the first time I read it:

Children are contemptuous, haughty, irritable, envious, sneaky, selfish, lazy, flighty, timid, liars and hypocrites, quick to laugh and cry, extreme in expressing joy and sorrow, especially about trifles, they'll do anything to avoid pain but they enjoy inflicting it: little men already. ~Jean de La Bruyère, Les Caractères, 1688

^ My friends from Qld came over on the train ... they had a stop-over in Kalgoorlie and my g/f was telling me the stories of how the pubs tried to circumvent the decency/hygiene laws (apparently selling booze sans clothing was illegal hehe). Anyway, one of the ways they tried to get around it was by wearing clingfilm/gladwrap ... of course, I had to add my little bit "speaking of gladwrap .... " hehehehehee ... thanks again Sensor ... great timing!
